Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity has made it their mission to build affordable housing to address the poverty and lack of proper shelter that many are forced to face. Habitat for Humanity works in nearly 70 countries across the globe, and they even have solid footing right here in Brevard County.
Habitat for Humanity of Brevard County is using rewarding volunteer work and donations to target the problem of sub-standard housing, and they have found that the surrounding community has a lot to offer as they work to achieve their mission to create a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Northrop Grumman recently partnered up with Habitat for Humanity for their “If I Had a Hammer” Builders Society Luncheon. Tom Vice, President at Northrop Grumman, stood up to speak about how the organization and his mentors have inspired him throughout his life. He spoke the Habitat for Humanity mantra of “a hand up, not a hand out,” and talked about how this outlook on charity helps the family in ways that will continue to benefit them for years to come.
For those who are not familiar with Habitat for Humanity’s work, the organization does not actually give houses to people. They instead build houses with those who are in need and recruit volunteers to assist with the building. They then sell the homes to homeowner partners through zero interest loans, giving families to opportunity to own a home who otherwise would not be able to afford one or receive traditional financing. Furthermore, the recipients must devote at least 200 hours of “sweat equity,” or time spent volunteering in the community or building their home or other Habitat homes.
By the end of the event, enough money was raised to sponsor the entire build for a family in need in Brevard. This is an amazing achievement because in just one day, the life of a family has been ultimately changed. This kind of impact is what has inspired our very own Joe Harris to become a board member for Habitat for Humanity of Brevard. He is honored to have been nominated, and we are so excited for both him and Morgan Financial to get more involved in the organization.
